Position Summary

The Region 5 Health Communications Intern will support communication efforts across Region 5 local health departments (Alamance, Caswell, Chatham, Durham, Guilford, Orange, Person, Randolph, and Rockingham) by helping develop clear, accurate, and accessible public health information for community audiences. The intern will assist with day-to-day communications needs such as press releases, social media, website content, outreach materials, public health campaigns, and other communications projects based on regional department priorities.

Roles & Responsibilities
  • Draft and edit press releases, media advisories, talking points, FAQs, newsletter content, and other public-facing materials.

  • Develop social media content, including post copy, content calendars, basic graphics, alt text, and campaign materials.

  • Draft and update website content, program descriptions, event information, and other digital communications.

  • Develop and adapt outreach and educational materials such as fact sheets, flyers, rack cards, posters, and toolkits for public health programs and initiatives.

  • Support communications for public health campaigns, events, services, and awareness efforts by adapting messages for different audiences and communication channels.

  • Assist with photo, video, and multimedia projects, including captions, short-form videos, interview preparation, and organization of reusable visual assets.

  • Organize and maintain regional communications templates, shared files, content inventories, and other resources that can support future department/regional communications work.

Required Skills & Experience
  • Current undergraduate student in public health, communications, journalism, marketing, health education, or a related field.

  • Strong writing, editing, and communication skills.

 

Preferred Skills & Experience
  • Prior health communications, public health, journalism, marketing, or related experience.

  • Proficient with Microsoft suite or similar workplace software.

  • Experience with Canva or similar design software.

  • Experience developing social media or website content.

  • Experience with photography or video editing.

 

Additional Information

Schedule is expected to be mostly remote, with in-person attendance requested for special meetings or events.
