Internship Opportunities

The Region 5 Health Communications Intern will support communication efforts across Region 5 local health departments (Alamance, Caswell, Chatham, Durham, Guilford, Orange, Person, Randolph, and Rockingham) by helping develop clear, accurate, and accessible public health information for community audiences. The intern will assist with day-to-day communications needs such as press releases, social media, website content, outreach materials, public health campaigns, and other communications projects based on regional department priorities.

The Workforce Development Intern will support Region 5’s workforce development efforts by assisting with planning, coordination, assessment and evaluation activities. This role will help strengthen connections among regional public health staff and support staff development opportunities.

The Chatham County Public Health Department Community Engagement and Outreach Intern will aid the health department's efforts to connect residents with public health programs, services, and resources. This role will help strengthen community awareness through outreach presentations, distributing health education materials, and supporting engagement activities with local partners and residents

Working closely with communications staff, the position helps develop and deliver public health messages across a range of topics, including tobacco and vaping prevention/cessation initiatives, mental health initiatives, and sexual and reproductive health initiatives, among other topics. The position will disseminate messages using mediums such as social media, flyers and videos.

The Health Policy Intern will work on Durham County's and Orange County's Board of Health Smoking Rule, including research, drafting, and coordination tasks as directed by the Region 5 Tobacco Prevention Manager.

This position supports the Health Education team by researching and drafting health communications and assisting with community workshops. Additional duties include community event planning, prep, and execution, as well as with development and dissemination of Community Health Needs Assessment materials.

Bull City Strong is the health literacy initiative at the Durham County Department of Public Health. Our goal is to share accurate, accessible, and actionable health information within our community. This practicum position will support those efforts by helping us assess community and organizational health literacy across Durham County.

This internship will be focused on increasing the accessibility of key Health Education documents to align with federal legislation that will be implemented in April 2027.
