NC DPH Fellowship Opportunities

This position will coordinate with diverse teams within the State Center for Health Statistics (SCHS) to integrate activities across five SCHS programs. This role would efficiently design cross-program data linkages (birth, birth defects, cancer, death, and hospital discharge data), expand population-based analyses, streamline the data use and data dissemination for research process, and support shared analytics and reporting. Example projects include assisting the Birth Defects Monitoring Program (BDMP) with piloting electronic case reports by processing and integrating case report files into the BDMP workflow; and automating vital records data imports into the BDMP database. By aligning program needs with available data systems, this position would make the best use of time and resources, reduce duplication of effort, and deliver long-term value beyond individual projects.

The fellow will assist with data modernization activities within the Data Office, with a primary focus on supporting efforts to strengthen data infrastructure and analytics across DPH. Much of this work will sit at the intersection of data lake architecture development and refinement, data quality improvement, and analytics, including coding, process automation, and the creation of visualizations and reports. The most successful candidate will be someone who is analytical, technically skilled, and comfortable working across complex datasets to enhance assessment and surveillance activities.

The fellow would support process improvement and performance management work within the North Carolina Division of Public Health (NC DPH), with a primary focus on strengthening collaboration and accountability between NC DPH and Local Health Departments (LHDs). Much of this work sits at the intersection of contracts/grants administration, quality improvement (QI), and data systems modernization. The most successful candidate will be someone who is organized, systems-oriented, and comfortable working across both people and data.

The DPH fellow will support grants and cooperative agreement management within the Data Office, with a primary focus on enhancing tracking, reporting, and situational awareness for internal and external stakeholders. Much of this work will sit at the intersection of data management, financial oversight, and program support, including creating and populating a shared repository of grant and cooperative agreement information, developing Smartsheet dashboards for expenditures, and designing forms/reports to capture milestone progress for the ELC cooperative agreement. The most successful candidate will be someone who is analytical, detail-oriented, proficient in Excel and Smartsheet, and comfortable working with grants and budgeting processes. Training and credentialing in NCFS to run expense reports will also be required.

This position ensures the accuracy, completeness, and timeliness of data reported to the Central Cancer Registry (CCR) by hospital-based cancer registries, incident facilities, physician practices and pathology labs. Responsibilities include auditing and reconciling data, monitoring reporting compliance, performing case-finding and record linkage, and providing technical consultation and training on cancer reporting standards and quality assurance. The position collaborates on database design and queries, tracks and resolves data issues, and supports annual submissions and federal data quality requirements. It also maintains professional relationships, participates in relevant workgroups, and keeps up to date with cancer codes, cancer surveillance and registry database applications.

The Public Health Epidemiologist will support injury and violence prevention within the Chronic Disease and Injury Branch, Injury and Violence Prevention Section, focusing on epidemiologic surveillance, data analysis, and applied research to inform prevention strategies. The role includes analyzing complex datasets, generating reports, and translating findings into public health action. The Branch provides opportunities for mentoring and supervising interns, students, residents, and fellows to build workforce capacity and enhance professional development. The most successful candidate will be analytical, detail-oriented, and skilled at collaborating with internal teams and external partners.

The Nurse Consultant I would support and lead recruitment efforts for local medical examiners, with a primary focus on strengthening the medical examiner workforce across local jurisdictions. This role would center on coordinating and advancing recruitment strategies, serving as a point of contact for outreach, and supporting local partners in identifying and engaging qualified candidates. The most successful candidate will be someone who is proactive, relationship-oriented, and comfortable taking the reins on recruitment initiatives while working collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders.

The Business Officer I would support the Operations Unit, with a primary focus on assisting the accounting team on special projects and providing operational support as needed. Much of this work would sit at the intersection of financial operations, grants tracking, and project-based support, with an emphasis on coordinating tasks, tracking financial information, and supporting ongoing initiatives. The most successful candidate will be someone who is detail-oriented, organized, and comfortable working across teams, with grants tracking experience being especially beneficial.
