MINIMUM EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

Master’s degree in statistics, mathematics, data science, data analytics, psychometrics or measurement and evaluation from an appropriately credited institution; or Bachelor’s degree in statistics, mathematics, data science, data analytics, psychometrics or measurement and evaluation from an appropriately credited institution. Some experience in data analysis is preferred.

Position Description

This position will serve the State Center for Health Statistics specifically working in the Central Cancer Registry. This is technical and professional work in the collection, evaluation and analysis of program data for a state agency. Positions provide statistical support and data evaluation for an agency or program with continuous and varied data and analysis requirements. Studies are usually requested by management, but the statistician may also recommend areas of investigation. Procedures for collecting and processing data may be subject to the review of others; however, statistical techniques and analytical processes employed are usually the province of the employee. Narratives or public presentations may be used to explain the study process and the conclusions in terms of statistically significant results and subject matter or program area conclusions. Drafts or final reports are reviewed by the manager requesting the study for conformance to study objectives, correctness of program or subject matter statements, and for implications of analyses.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Thorough knowledge of the methods of statistical research of information; and investigative methodology, its application to problems and the presentation of results.

  • Thorough knowledge of statistical software.

  • Ability to initiate, develop, and design research projects

  • Ability to apply statistical principles and methods in the evaluation of problems.

  • Ability to analyze statistical data and to present findings clearly and concisely in written and graphic form.

  • Ability to modify package computer programs and to utilize computers and calculators.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, managers, other agencies, and the public.
