MINIMUM EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

Master's degree in Epidemiology or closely related health field from an appropriately accredited institution. Some related experience is preferred.

Position Description

This position will serve the Oral Health section on their epidemiology team. Positions in this class may be entry level or serve in an independent role. Employees' work may have a significant impact on public health as they plan, develop and conduct investigations into the causes of negative health outcomes including disease and injury. Employees implement interventions to control and prevent negative health outcomes. They collect, analyze and interpret statistical data, and prepare epidemiologic reports. Employees provide epidemiological data for consultation and assist in the development and coordination of plans to reduce the risk of negative health outcomes including death. Work includes assisting county health departments in formulating strategies to manage problems, conducting varied literature reviews and implementing evidence-based interventions. Employees may specialize in a number of areas including infectious disease, chronic disease, injury, environmental/occupational epidemiology, health care evaluation, cancer, reproductive health, cardiovascular disease or human genetics. Employees may develop policies and procedures for new and existing disease control or other public health prevention programs on a limited basis or scope. Work in this class involves training, technical assistance and consultation regarding epidemiology and control of diseases or other health outcomes. Employees serve as technical experts in the assigned area. Work may include trend analysis and independent statistical and epidemiological analysis. Employees typically report to a Public Health Epidemiology Supervisor or Public Health Epidemiology Program Manager.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Working knowledge of epidemiologic principles, investigations, surveillance, study design, descriptive statistics, statistical analysis and interpretation of statistical data and scientific literature.

  • Considerable knowledge of biostatistics including the use of statistical software and statistical programming languages.

  • Considerable knowledge of computers, database design, management and manipulation.

  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
